Movies

I am far behind on this blog because I got behind on my movie watching I am now caught up. I will be putting a list of 7 movies up every day until I catch back up.

1. Deadpool (2016)
Based on the comic book
As a movie: A
Fun Factor: 10
Should you see it: unless you're easily offended you need to check this one out. It is fun and action packed from start to finish.
2. Kung Fu Panda 3 (2016)
He's a panda who does Kung Fu and he's back for a third time.
As a movie: B-
Fun Factor: 8
Should you see it: this is by no means a game changing movie, but it's fun and keeps your attention and is worth watching if you're looking for good family entertainment
3.  Cronos (1993)
An old man and his granddaughter find a machine that keeps you young at their antique store.
As a movie: A
Fun Factor: 7
Should you see it: Yes you should. Guillermo del Toro is  one of my favorite writers and directors. His story telling is captivating and this story is no different. Do yourself a favor and see this movie.
4. Sicario (2015)
This movie is about a drug task force going to Juarez.
As a movie: B+
Fun Factor:4
Should you see it: This movie has phenomenal acting by Benicio.del Toro, Emily Blunt, and Josh Brolin. It was good but I felt there was something lacking that stopped it from being great.
5.  Catch-22 (1970)
This movie is based on the classic book with the same title. And goes through how soldiers are coping with war.
As a movie: B-
Fun Factor: 6
Should you see it: Despite being a decent movie and having great actors in it such as the always amazing Orson Wells, it was a bit boring. Definitely see it just know you might doze from time to time. This will be okay because you won't miss anything.
6. Blood Simple (1984)
As a movie: A
Fun Factor: 8
Should you see it: This is the Coen brothers first movie, and even from the start you could see there talent. This movie has that film noir feel that is both fun and entertaining to watch. If your a Coen brothers fan who hasn't seen this go watch it. If your not a Coen brothers fan this movie is still for you.
7. The Shining (1980)
This movie based on a Stephen King book is about a family who moves into a lodge to be the caretakers for the winter. The dad goes crazy and tries to kill his family. Also the boy has mental powers.
As a movie: A
Fun Factor: 9
Should you see it: Reviews are mixed and a lot of people don't like it. I on the other hand love this movie. It's written by Stephen King, directed by Stanley Kubrick, starring Jack Nicholson, and features a weird scene with a man in a dog custom what's not to love.

Saturday, February 6, 2016

It's a lot harder than I imagined to watch a movie every day. This is my list that should have been up Sunday for January 24- 30. Which means I won't have a list up by Sunday the 7th but I will try to have it up by Wednesday. It will all depend if I have caught up or not. Anyway here's last week's list.

1. People,Places,Things (2015)
A man catches his girlfriend cheating on him on their twin daughters birthday. The movie then picks up one year later, and basically the plot is how he's doing in life now.
As a movie: C-
Fun Factor: 7
Should you see it: This isn't anything special but with Jermaine Clement's genuine performance, and the fact this movie has heart I say see it.

2. Trophy Kids (2013)
This is a documentary about parents who go to ridiculous links to have their kids be the best at sports, and the pressure it puts on the kids.
As a movie: B
Fun Factor: 5
Should you see it: Yes just be warned you will this film strongly disliking the parents. You will also feel really bad for these kids.

3. Meet the Dudesons (2006)
This is basically Jackass with guys from Finland
As a movie: F
Fun Factor: 4
Should you see it: No unless you're a Jackass fan, and if that's the case just watch one of the Jackass movies instead.

4. Scanners (1981)
The best I can describe this movie is there are people with mind powers called Scanners.
As a movie: B
Fun Factor: 7
Should you see it:  I love director David Cronenberg, but his movies aren't for everyone. This movie has people's heads exploding in it which could turn some people away from watching. But if you are a Cronenberg fan or you enjoy good Sci-fi then check it out.

5. Equinox (1971)
A group of college students find a demonic book in the woods
As a movie: D
Fun Factor: 9
Should you see it: With claymation monsters, and the all out cheesy factor it's no surprise that this film is a cult classic. If you like cheesy films you will like it. If you are not a fan of cult classics skip it.

6. Eraserhead (1977)
A man with a weird hairdo takes care of his ET looking premature baby.
As a movie: A
Fun Factor: 6
Should you see it: If you have ever seen anything David Lynch has put out you know he's out there. Of all the Lynch movies I would say this is the most out there.  This is also one of the most visually stunning, haunting, and original movies I've seen. I'm a little ashamed as a Lynch fan, and a movie fan it took me so long to see it. If you like to watch movies just to be entertained than skip it. If you truly love watching movies as an art form and you've never seen this go see it. It will stay with you for days.

Amy (2015)
Documentary about the life and death of Amy Winehouse
As a movie: C-
Fun Factor: 4
Should you see it:  I know this movie is critically acclaimed but I didn't care for it. The person who put this documentary together did a good job of putting it together, and that's why I gave it a C. I always thought Amy Winehouse was not a likeable person who had a bad drug habit ,and never really tried to really get help. She even brags about not going to rehab in her most famous song. I will say this movie didn't change that opinion.  Some people will find what I am saying harsh, and to those people I say so. People die of drugs everyday. And the tragedy is some of them really wanted help, but they didn't get it in time, but no one cares about them. Just because Winehouse was famous she's made out to be a martyr. The truth is she was an addict, she passed away. The lesson is if you do drugs and don't care there are consciences. The thing is you can learn that from an after school special, so skip this movie.

Wednesday, January 27, 2016

I know I'm a couple days late but here's my movie list for Jan 17-23
1. The identity theft of Mitch Mustain (2013)
This is a documentary about top high school prospect Mitch Munstain who had a lot of controversy surrounding him as he started the University of Arkansas. Who with all his talent never became a big star.
As a movie: C
Fun Factor: 5
Should you see it: If you are like me and a huge Arkansas Razorbacks Fan, or you like 30 for 30 then you will like it. If you're not into sports skip it.
2. Hot Tub Time Machine 2 (2015)
Once again there is time travel in a hot tub.
As a movie: F
Fun Factor: 4
Should you see it: I liked the first one, because it was just goofy enough to work. This one doesn't even try. Skip this movie.
3.  The Revenant (2015)
This film is a well deserved Oscar nominated film. Basically without giving away spoilers I will say it's a movie based on a true story about revenge, and Leonardo DiCaprio gets attacked by a bear. The acting is phenomenal.
As a movie: A
Fun Factor: 5
Should you see it: Yes what are you waiting for go now!
4. Sharknado 3: Oh Hell No (2015)
As a movie: D-
Fun Factor: 10
Should you see it: This is not a good movie. But it's a lot of fun to watch. If you enjoy B movies. You will love this film. I love this film. If you don't like goofy horror films than skip it.
5. Meet the Patels (2015)
Indian actor Ravi Patel is getting pressured by his parents because he is not married. He agrees to let his parents try to help him find a wife.
As a movie: B
Fun Factor: 7
Should you see it: This is a good documentary do yourself a favor and see it
6. Elite Squad: The Enemy Within (2010)
This is about a elite task force in Brazil.
As a movie:  B+
Fun Factor:  7
Should you see it: Yes, the description I gave doesn't do this movie justice. The thing is when I make my plot summary I have one rule no spoilers. So without spoiling anything I will say watch this it's good.
7. Cartel Land (2015)
This Oscar nominated documentary is about cartels in Mexico and the people trying to stop them both in the USA, and Mexico.
As a movie: B+
Fun Factor: 4
Should you see it: Although parts of this film are violent and gritty, I still feel this is a must see documentary.

Movies from January 9-16
1. Ted 2 (2015)
I want to say I had no desire to watch this. I saw the first one that was enough for me. Last week I stayed with a friend of mine who's humor has not changed since college. This was his pick to watch not mine. In case you didn't know this is a movie about a Teddy bear that comes to life and gets high as he says foul things. That's about as good as Ted 2 gets. As a movie: F  Fun Factor: 4  Should you see it:  Unless you just love that type of humour it's a huge no. I love Morgan Freeman, but not even his presence could make me find any redeeming qualities for this fine.
2.Vacation (2015)
This is a remake of the 1983 classic movie. The plot is Rusty Griswold remembers the vacation he took as a kid to the amusement park Wally World and decides to take his family on a trip to the same place.  As a movie: F+  Fun Factor: 3 should you watch it. I love the original Vacation it's a comedy classic. So I had nothing but high hopes especially with a solid cast, and so many awesome cameos. With all this going for the movie it still came out boring and stale. This is why sadly I have to say don't see it.
3. Sharkansas Woman's prison massacre (2015)
Sharks are in Arkansas and they are after some prisoners who just escaped from a woman's prison. As a movie: F  Fun Factor: 5  Should you see it: I went in knowing that this is a dumb movie. But loving cheesy films, and being from Arkansas I thought I might enjoy it, but I was so wrong. It was not even cheesy fun. It never really explains why, these sharks can go on land. Another thing that bugs me was it was shot in Florida. You can't tell me it wasn't in the budget to shoot on location. There is no where in Arkansas that would be super expensive. I could go on with many other reasons why this movie stinks but I will end with nobody see this movie.
4.Scouts guide to the Zombie Apocalypse (2015)
The zombie apocalypse happens and it's up to 3 scouts and a stripper to survive. As a movie: D+  Fun Factor: 7  Should you see it. I liked this movie it is really dumb. Also there are Zombie cats!! This movie is fun but it's not a good movie. So if you don't want to check your brain at the door, and indulge in pure stupid comedy than skip it.
5. Guardians of the galaxy (2014)
This is Marvel movie with 5 outlaws who become a team of heroes. As a movie: A  Fun Factor: 10  Should you see it: If you haven't seen this movie yet you may be the only one. I love this movie it's great. This is the only movie I have bought in over 3 years. Which means it is so good it's the only movie I own on Bluray. Watch it at least 3 times.
6.The Interview (2014)
Seth Rogan and James Franco to North Korea to interview Kim Jong Un  As a movie: C-  Fun Factor: 8  Should you see it: As I rewatched this movie I realized it wasn't as good as I remembered. In fact it's kind of boring. In spite of this Randall Park is amazing as Kim Jong Un. Parks' performance alone makes this movie worth watching.
7. Voices (2014)
Ryan Reynolds hears his cat and dog talking to him. He also murders people.  As a movie: D  Fun Factor: 5  Should you see it: I like Ryan Reynolds and Anna Kendrick who also stars in this film. They don't always make good movies though. This movie is a perfect example. The idea of this movie could make a good dark comedy the problem was it was too dark and not enough comedy. What I'm saying is definitely skip it.
8. Ink (2009)
This movie is hard to explain. Basically it is about a father and daughter who go on a weird trip through some kind of purgatory.  As a movie: C-  Fun Factor: 6  Should you see it: This movie has many flaws. The plot is not completely explained. The acting is terrible. The movie is interesting though and it keeps your attention so I say give it a shot.

Movies I've watched in January

1. Run Lola Run (1998)
This is a German movie and it is different. I don't want give away the plot but I will say it's fast pace makes it easy to watch. The title probably is one of the best summaries of the plot. If you still haven't figured the plot out it's about a girl named Lola who has to run. As a movie- B+  Fun factor- 8   Should you see it- yes it's fast paced and unique.
2. St. Vincent (2014)
This movie is about a boy and his mom who have moved to a new home after his parents have gotten a divorce. Their new next door neighbor Vinny is a rude drunk played by the always amazing Bill Murray. Through a series of events Vinny ends up as the boys babysitter, and they form a friendship. As a movie- C  Fun factor- 7  Should you see it-  yes it's not a life changing film and by no means would I call it a great movie. But this movie is entertaining and has solid performances from the actors.
3. American Yakuza (1995)
Viggo Mortensen is an FBI agent working undercover for the Yakuza, and it's as horrible as it sounds.  As a movie- D  Fun Factor- 5  Should you see it- no this movie takes itself way to seriously to have such a goofy plot. If you are like me and are a Viggo fan don't watch it.
4. The Hateful Eight (2015)
This is Tarantino's new film, and it's another western. It is also one of his most violent movies. As a movie- C+  Fun Factor-7  Should you see it- If you are Tarantino fan it has many of his regular actors in it also it is ultra violent as one expects from his movies. So fans see this movie. If you are not a fan with little action and almost a 3 hour running time you'd be better off to skip it.
5. Detention of the Dead
Yet another tired attempt at a zombie comedy. This time an outbreak has happened at a high school and the only survivors are in detention. This movie tries to be a Breakfast Club meets zombies and it fails big time. As a movie-D-  Fun Factor-5 Should you see it- One word no.
6. Darkman (1990)
A man's laboratory is set on fire with him in it. When he wakes up he is severely burnt and on drugs that not only help him feel no pain but also makes him aggressive. Now he's determined to get revenge. As a movie- B-   Fun Factor- 9  Should you see it-  I say yes, but I honestly know most people won't like it. This movie is for nerds. It's cheesy, and over the top. This is classic Sam Raimi if you're an Evil Dead fan than this for you. It is worth mentioning that Liam Neeson and Frances McDormand are in this film. If you like either of them and want to see some of their early work give this movie a try.
7. Dennis Rodman's Big Bang in Pyongyang (2015)
North Korea fascinates me. Any time there's a documentary about the country I watch it. This film is about Dennis Rodman taking a group of basketball players to play against the North Korea national team. The thing is anything one might hope to learn about this isolated country is overshadowed by the the craziness that is Dennis Rodman. But that is okay because it's still fun to watch. As a movie- A-   Fun Factor 10  Should you watch it- yes yes and yes. Dennis Rodman is amazing. Watching him get drunk, yell at people, and make everyone uncomfortable it is well worth your time. Just don't expect to learn much about North Korea.
8. Backcountry (2015)
A couple goes backpacking in the woods, and are attacked by a bear.  As a movie- B  Fun Factor- 6 should you see it-  The main problem I had with this movie is it was a little slow.  Some scenes were just 2 people in the woods talking, and not much more than that. Overall it was a decent indie film. The next day I went hiking and out of nowhere I started to think what if a bear attacks. That's the sign of a good movie it stays with you days later. So for sure watch it just maybe wait a few days before hiking or the movie might mess with your head.
